Walking around Loch Ness and staying in Drumnadrochit Hotel and The Loch Ness Clansman Hotel
Our two hotels on the Great Glen Way offer excellent accommodation to suit all budgets when walking not only The Great Glen Way but ideal for short interesting and historical walks within the area allowing you to both stay longer and attempt a variety of walks.
There are great forest and moorland walks along the north side where our hotels are based.
Also from both bases we are within easy access of Glen Affric and walks through The Great Wood of Caledon and around some of the many lochs in that area, which was the filming location for the original Last of the Mohicans made many years ago for BBC.
From Drumnadrochit Village you have access to Urquhart Bay Woods and a walk down to Mighty Loch Ness home of the legendary Loch Ness Monster.
Very close to the village is the walk up Craigmonie and Dhivach Falls, both a wee bit more challenging but fascinating and linked to great historical tales.Craigmonie known locally as “Queens Rock” was supposed to be the point where the Danish Prince Monie conducted his troops in battle and Dhivach Lodge above the waterfalls is where JM Barrie who wrote Peter Pan came for his vacation at the turn of the century.
Close to The Clansman you have the old coffin road that leads up to Abriachan and the many woodland walks through Abriachan Forest Trust and also lower down the wonderful Abriachan Nurseries for a delightful seat and a gaze over Loch Ness.
From Abriachan you can join The Great Glen Way and walk back to Drumnadrochit or over Blackfold and down to The Caledonian Canal and into the City of Inverness.
For those more adventurous and looking for nearly an all day challenge a walk up Bunloit and an attempt to climb the highest hill in the area Meall Fuar Mhonaidh-”Hill of the cold grey mists” pronounced-Meeeowl-Foor-Vony,is a must not only for the spectacular views of the area but an appreciation of the wild and foreboding landscape that is The Highlands of Scotland
Whatever level of walk you wish to undertake both our hotels are great starting points.
